Christian Limousin
Christian Limousin (1948–2023) was a poet, art critic and historian, literary critic, and specialist in the work of Georges Bataille. His poetic writing primarily focused on the relationship between the arts and literature. He contributed to numerous journals and wrote catalogue texts for many artists, including Frédéric Benrath, Isabel Boizanté, René Bonargent, Philippe Bonnet, Régis Bouvier, Bruno Chabert, Christine Vadrot, and Judith Wolfe, among others.
Christian Limousin is with me at the foot of Georges Bataille's grave in Vézelay. I point out to him that Bataille died on July 9th, my birthday. Anecdote. On the bare cement slab is drawn an open, empty eye, without a pupil. The cement is scored, bitten, worn away until the name of the author of The Star Eaters is invisible. Visible. Invisible. Pascal: "What vanity is painting, which attracts admiration by the resemblance of things whose originals we do not admire." Limousin: "Painting is not an imitation, especially since it does not pertain to visibility. To paint is to return to an invisible reality." And to write it! This is the mad project that Christian is undertaking: To eat the sky of painting! And to ascend to it (to the blue of the sky) with all the painters he loves! Before he died, he made me promise to make visible this love he bore for the invisible, until it merged with him and I was lost in the dazzling depths of the heavens. And of letters. Promise kept!
