Mid-1960s… Chamery, a charming little Champagne village near Reims, nestled among the vineyards. Nicolas and Louise spent their childhood under the vast umbrella of a large, generous cherry tree that has now disappeared. Now, young adults, having confided their feelings for each other, they are inseparable, envisioning the future as an eternal spring. The problem is that Nicolas, in complicity with his old friend Clovis, has taken the idea of building an airplane. Louise doesn't like the unusual project, seeing it as a whim, a kind of competition, but it is not her intention to shatter her companion's dream. While Chamery lives to the rhythm of working the vineyard, and for the time being, the sound of the church bells and the noise of the pruning shears bears no resemblance to the drone of a propeller churning the clouds, in Clovis's barn, the plane is slowly taking shape. For some time now, however, peace and quiet have been a thing of the past. There are the Féraud brothers, two good-for-nothings always prone to picking quarrels and plotting dirty tricks. There is also the Carcanier, a kind of nocturnal scarecrow that frequents the stump of the cherry tree and in whose existence many of the villagers believe. People will even come to barricade themselves in their houses, especially since the grocer, the unfortunate Clémence, is found dead in her bed, murdered by a mysterious prowler.
