Mid-1960s… Chamery, a charming little village in the Champagne region near Reims, nestled among the vineyards. Nicolas and Louise spent their childhood under the vast canopy of a large and generous cherry tree, now gone. Now young adults, having confided their feelings for each other, they are inseparable, envisioning a future as an eternal spring. The problem is that Nicolas, in cahoots with his old friend Clovis, has conceived the idea of building an airplane. Louise doesn't approve of this unusual project, seeing it as a whim, a kind of competition, but she has no intention of shattering her partner's dream. While Chamery lives to the rhythm of the vineyards, and while, for the moment, the sound of church bells and the swish of pruning shears bear no resemblance to the whir of a propeller churning through the clouds, in Clovis's barn, the airplane is gradually taking shape. For some time now, however, tranquility has been a thing of the past. There are the Féraud brothers, two good-for-nothings always ready to pick a fight and plot some mischief. And then there's the Carcanier, that kind of nocturnal scarecrow that haunts the cherry tree stump and whose existence many of the villagers believe in. In fact, people will eventually barricade themselves in their houses, especially after the grocer, the unfortunate Clémence, is found dead in her bed, murdered by a mysterious prowler.
