Hervé Gouerec

Born in 1959, Hervé Gouérec lives in a small village in the Normandy countryside. Now retired, he devotes himself to writing and has decided to recount his family's adventure at the beginning of the last century. Through this story, he develops a passion for the history of Bretons who emigrated to Shanghai, China.

During a stay in Finistère in 1988, Émile sat facing the Iroise Sea, lost in his childhood memories. He found himself back in 1934, at the age of seven, in the port of Marseille. He was ready to board a passenger ship with his sister Andrée and his parents, after a holiday in Brittany. It was his fourth voyage: destination China, where he was born. His father had been a policeman in the French Concession of Shanghai for ten years. The journey was punctuated by stopovers: Port Said, Suez, Djibouti, Colombo, Singapore, Saigon, and Hong Kong. Then came life in China: school, leisure activities, holidays. Then, in 1937, came the Sino-Japanese War. The French Concession suffered the consequences of the conflict. The situation was increasingly worrying. What would become of this expatriate family? Publication date: November 4, 2024. Order Press release
