Andréas Becker

Andréas Becker is a German-born writer who writes in French. Born in Hamburg in 1962, he made a remarkable literary debut in 2012 with his first novel, *L'Effrayable* (The Terrifying One), initially published by Éditions de la Différence in Paris and then, from 2015 onward, like all his works, by Éditions d'en bas in Lausanne, Switzerland. Becker's literary work is characterized by a high degree of linguistic inventiveness, whether through the distortion and invention of words, as in *L'Effrayable* or *Gueules* (Faceful Ones), through the subversion of punctuation, as in *Nébuleuses* (Nebulae), or through a non-chronological restructuring of the narrative, as in *Les Invécus* (The Inhabited). Other texts, such as *Ulla ou l'Effacement* (Ulla or the Erasure) or *Alcool mon Amour* (Alcohol My Love), draw on more personal experiences, written in a sensitive style that captures what remains unspeakable when taboo too often imposes silence. Finally, in La Castration, Becker invents a new style of detective novel in which an entire city becomes a disordered and menacing social body. Many of Becker's works have been adapted for the stage by Brigitte Mougin, Yann Karaquillo, and Denis Lavant, in monologues, staged readings, and other formats; Ulla ou l'Effacement and Gueules were adapted for film by Jean-Denis Bonan. Becker's work is the subject of intense academic research in Limoges, Paris, and Heidelberg, where a first doctoral thesis is currently being written. Andreas Becker lives and works in Paris and the Beaujolais region.

In the beginning was the word, and in the end, too, is the word. The word is, that's all. In this sense, the only subject of writing is writing, or more precisely, the only subject of the written word is the written word, the act of writing. The only subject that the word designates is the word. Through words, we access words. Through the distortion of words, we access the distortions that are necessary to speak. Otherwise, we say nothing. Publication date: September 1, 2024 Order Press release
